During the inaugural year of the new Riverside School in Glenwood Springs, we brought the Film Ranch to middle school students with a year-long after-school Filmmaking Workshop. Teaming up with True Media Productions, another nonprofit arts-in-education organization in the Roaring Fork Valley, we worked with a team of dedicated 6th-8th graders in creating an original short fictional film that they wrote, acted in, and performed in various crew roles.

After a long editing process that included working around the pandemic, the result is “The Phone Booth,” inspired by the Japanese Wind Phone.

In 2017, we collaborated with Colorado Mountain College and local middle school students to produce a short narrative video in a pilot workshop that we have moved full-scale to Riverview School next year.

The result was a short film about diversity called “Swap,” written and acted by a group of Glenwood Springs Middle School students.

In 2015 and 2016, we worked with Colorado Mountain College and El Pomar Foundation to host middle school video day camps for local students. Over the course of two weeks, students learned how to visually tell a story with a video camera, capture clean sound, learn interviewing techniques, and work together as a team to capture the footage they would use for their mini-documentaries. That was all in Week One!

During Week Two, students learned how to edit with Adobe Premiere and each worked individually on their own versions of documentaries “What Is Art?” using the shared footage.
